Mystery squeal and intermittent vibration in '84 245 Distributor...Bearings maybe(?) 200 1984

Hello all,

A few days ago I started hearing an intermittent squeal in my trusty '84 245 and thought "The dreaded day has finally come. My heater moter is going out!"

Alas, I was out of the car and heard it again, but louder. I popped open the hood, and for better or worse, it was coming from somewhere near the distributor. I put my hand on the dist. cap, and sure enough, every few seconds I could feel vibration for a second or two at the same time as the squeal.... it's sounds like bearings in a fan motor, but louder and a bit lower pitch.

I'm a newby at Volvos and haven't had the chance to learn much about distributors beyond changing the cap and rotor (which I did about 10-15,000 miles ago). My naive suspicion is that it has something to do with the distributor shaft (i.e., the shaft that the rotor sits on top of?) or something below that.

In short, I'm pretty clueless at this point, and could use some sage advice from those of you courageous enough to dig down below the distributor cap! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike
