No power. Bad juju. Please help diagnose. 200 1984

In the past day, my trusty 240 has been acting up. I haven't had a chance to really look into it yet, and I'm hoping for clues from the brain trust. Here are the symptoms:

-- Starts and idles well, but no power. Tough to get up over 40 mph.

-- Starts running a little hot after six or seven miles.

-- The engine has been running with sort of a muffled growl, and pings more than usual. (I thought the new sound was a result of the new exhaust and muffler, but those are about a month old.)

-- No smoke, no oil/coolant admixture, as far as I can tell. The oxygen sensor seems to be intact, the plug wires are solid and attached, and I don't see any gaping holes in the intake plumbing.

Maybe the timing has jumped? Or some sort of internal head gasket leak?

Where should I start?

Thanks in advance,

Steve M.
