You may not have an engine harness problem, this is not an engine harness problem! 200 1986

Fellow 86 240 owner here, a 245DL AKA Inga with 240K and an unexpected coating of snow (this is the third time she has been snowed on ever).

I also after reading up on wiring harness stuck out on the search. I found a genuine Volvo replacement harness at the PUP and purchased it for $35, one of my better buys.

I installed it and broke the dist connector in the process and had to get one out of the same car at the PUP.

After doing all that work here is what I found looking at that oil covered harness that I pulled out. There was not a single wire bad in the large harness that and only four bad ones in the smaller under the engine harness. Now those were really bad. Had lots of other bad wires in the Electrical harness under the hood. Had to replace wires from the washer motors, dryer, compressor, and lots of others. But those are not from the engine harness. Before you loose several hours of your life removing and installing something that was not bad, take a very close look where the wires pass though intake manifold 3 and 4. Ignore the large gray connector and the wires around the compressor and the washer motors when you do.

Now about the rattle in the dash, the no over drive, and the noise? That sounds like the OD relay , take out the 9 or so screws in the glove box and pull it out. The relay is to the left there behind the console. Been know to rattle, humm and sing to owners. Replacing or jumping the connector should take three off the list in one shot.

Rear Wiper is most likely a bad harness in the hinge in the back or a blown fuse. I would start by checking that, odds are good its the harness. You can get replacements on just splice in new wires. It is a PITA job, but now I have a door that unlocks, a defroster that will be needed in the AM, and the wiper motor runs.

No dash lights is possibly a bad rheostat on the dimmer switch, burned out bulbs, a loose connection on the back of the cluster or maybe a fuse.

No rear brake light is most likely a bad ground wire, corroded terminals, or a loose connection. Replacing all the connectors with new ones got rid of most of my ghosts back there.

Sounds like you have a typical 86 there, just needs a little love,

And bet you do not need a engine harness.

Good Luck from snow covered Pasadena Texas, It's only been since 1974 since the last time snow stuck to the ground here. Must be global warming or Al Gore's in town.

Paul
