Ok, so I haven't been on this message board in awhile. Here's what's happening. I bought my Dad's 98 Ford Contour from him, cheap, because it needed a new steering rack. It's amazing how after only 173000 km's a steering rack can fail, and now I understand why people are fed up with the quality of most domestic cars of that era. Anyway to make a long story fairly long, I had a Ford mechanic friend replace it at reasonable cost and now I'm driving that car. It runs well but I'm expecting more problems within the next 25000 km's or so. The plan is to get rid of it next year sometime.
So now I have even more time to finish taking apart the 740 and totally refurbish it. It will be my "long term" car, as I really like it.
Ok with that out of the way, I'm getting ready to order a few more things from FCP since they have their 10% off sale now til the end of December. (Also waiting for sway bars to go on sale at IPD.) Too bad the Canadian dollar has taken a nosedive in the past 2 months. I was planning to order new strut mount bearings -click here for the product I'm talking about. They are SKF so you know they're good, not that URO brand crap.
The plan is to install Bilstein HD's. Do you think I can get away with just changing out these bearings or should I do the whole plate assembly? I hope I can just do the bearings. Too bad I don't really have a good mental picture of how these things go together. I'm doing my best to describe what I have in mind here.
Thanks for any advice. While we're on this subject, can you suggest anything else that should be redone on the car (heh, that I haven't already done). There will be more to come on this topic...
I think another thing I should try is rebuilding the distributor (seals). It's a '91 and doesn't have the Hall sensor. When I had the cap off I looked in it with a mirror and found some oily residue in there. Car does run well though.
