AT not engine-braking 900

Hi all. My transmission is no longer holding when I move the selector to the 2 or 1 position. If I accelerate with the selector in first or second, the revs go up and the car wont upshift until I move the selector to D or a higher gear, but when I release the accelerator, the revs go down to almost idle, and the car feels as if in neutral. I live in a very hilly city, and don't feel very safe driving downhill in "neutral". The car is a '93 944T, so I assume the tranny is an AW72. Do you think that an ATF flush would do the trick, or am I looking at serious transmission repairs? The car seems to shift fine. I also get, intermittently, the OD arrow light going on by itself, with no effect on the OD mechanism, but this seems unrelated.
