Silicone-only (no gasket) water pump install? 200

I removed the water pump on my 89 245 to replace/ reseat the round seal on top. The face gasket itself broke into several pieces. I thought I had spare gaskets but I don't.

Has anyone used RTV copper/ blue only - without a gasket - on a pump install? I always use RTV on all 3 seals (the face, o-ring and round top seal) but don't remember if I've tried one with just silicone.

I've done it successfully on other vehicles. One just needs to be sure it's cured to the correct point - firm but pliable. I'm not sure about the 240 though because of the way the pump has to be pushed up during install ie. it's fine when the pump is an exact fit but the sliding motion may not work with a silicone bead.
