Need to fix tranny pan leak 200 1983

I used the search on this issue and could not find a definitive answer. I thought I would be a good steward to my '83 and replace the transmission filter. Bad idea!! It now leaks like a sieve and the old filter was not even dirty to begin with.
I used a paper gasket I picked up at Advance Auto. When I tackle this again, should I combine some type of gasket sealer (RTV?) with another paper gasket? I've heard differing opinions on cork gaskets. I will also check the pan mating surface for trueness. If it is warped, it probably is something I did during replacement - I feel confident this is the first time it had ever been removed. Thanks for any tips!
Jim
