What Just Happened? An Electrical Question... 200

This evening after work, I went out to my '84 wagon and got ready to head home. When I switched on the lights and put the car in gear (auto trans), I noticed the indicator light would go out in "D" and below. I shut the car down and pulled the console off and found a severed wire to the indicator bulb. Given that it was dark, cold and I had no wire repair tools with me, I elected to button everything up and fix it in the daylight since I had no problems up to that point. Once everything was back together, I started the car, put it in drive and all the dash illumination bulbs went out at the same time. I shut the car down again and checked all fuses. None blown. I could also tell I let the "magic smoke" out of something; a defineate electrical hot smell. What did I just fry? Aside from the bulbs, what should I be checking? I have yet to look at the Bently book (I am still at work)...
Thanks,
Nick
