142 stalls in reverse! 140-160

My first guess is that you are referring to a BW35 transmission.

My second guess is that the gearbox is toast. I had similar symptoms with an automatic when it bit the dust.

Supposedly, there are transmission rebuilders that will still actually repair an automatic and not just swap in a new reuild. Probably hard to find though and would be cost prohibitive. Could be hard to find replacement parts for a 40 year old automatic too.

You may want to consider a change to a manual transmission. You will find driving your 140 a whole new and pleasant experience.
