Dead Battery or what?? 200

Well first off Happy New Year!!

Secondly, I went to start the car today and realized that the dome light had been left on and the battery was flat, again. After calling CAA and getting a boost I went for a drive thinking that'll charge the battery. We drove for nearly an hour and then stopped for gas. After paying for the fuel the car wouldn't turn over and I needed a jump to get going. We drove back to town, made a few stops and left the car running. Once home I turned off the car and tried to start it, started no problem, shut it down and tried again, nothing. So I connected the charger and after charging for oh maybe 10 min. the meter said it was charged, it almost started. Then put it back on charge, called my father inlaw, then noticed it was reading a good battery. Now, the charger has a "boost" function so I tried that to get the car moved after a stern talking to by the superintendent, sure enough it started. I then disconnected the charger and outta pure curiousity shut off the car, it started fine!! So I moved the car and then tried again...started. So, is my battery just not holding the charge or is my alternator not doing its thing or what??

Sorry for the long ramble. It's been a long afternoon.

Cheers,
Matt

ps I didn't mention it's really cold, -19C
