If you don't want to make another bracket - wouldn't be too much work to copy the existing one and just make it a bit longer to the front,

You may not like either of these ideas:

1) cut 1/2" off the casting on the alt that the bolt goes through, or

2) with a cutoff grinder, cut a slot 1/2" back from the front through the casting on the alt, just wide enough for the ear of the bracket to index into. That'll locate the alt front to back, and not compromise the casting as much by making it shorter as in option 1.
