It is not difficult at all. I installed an M46 in my '85 with a B230F.
The main thing you need to concern yourself with is getting the transmission that mates to the engine in your car. I'm not sure what you've got in there, but your options are either going to be M41 or M46 (if you want the OD, these are the trans to go for). From the donor car, you will want the following:
- Transmission crossmember and mount
- Rear axle (since the ratio is likely different - may not be though - ask the gear gurus here.) M41 used a 4.1 and the M46 was usually paired with a 3.31. I'm running my M46 with a 3.73 rearend and 1st is a little low but it helps with the around town pep. WIth my setup you are at about 3000RM in 5th (OD) at 70mph
- Bellhousing (just take the trans and the bellhousing together, don't separate) - this should also include the clutch fork which you will need as well. Try to grab the return spring, and the little washers and rubber blocks for the clutch cable where it connects to the fork. You will likely need a come-along to relieve pressure on the clutch cable to disconnect it. Hook the come-along from the fork to something in the front of the car and tighten to loosen the cable - use eye protection here as you have to remove the return spring as well (unless it's connected to the trans itself)
- Clutch cable (I would just buy a new one from importec.com or IPD).
- Brake/Clutch pedal assembly.
- Wiring harness that runs from the trans (connects to reverse switch, 4th gear switch, and OD solenoid). Other end connects to the internal harnesses in the car (main harness for reverse connection, OD harness for the OD solenoid and 4th gear switch) - you will need the little OD harness as well, including the relay. This connects the trans harness for 4th gear, OD switch, OD relay, 5th gear indicator, and power from the main fuse block (There is a 4-pin connector in the dash between the heater and the instrument cluster for connecting the 5th light and main power).
- Get the shifter, rubber boot, etc.
Buy New:
New clutch, throwout bearing, and pressure plate - get a new Sachs kit from importec.com or IPD that includes all 3
Sure I'm forgetting something, but I'm sure someone else will fill in the gaps. Feel free to ask more questions - you will likely have some. I would also replace the rear engine seal while you have the transmission out.
