steering column squeak 200 1986

My '86 240 has long had a rattle in the steering column. I've assumed it's the telescoping connection. It used to rattle only when going over big bumps. Now it rattles at highway speeds, but I think it's only because of a front wheel vibration (out of balance). Not sure if this rattle is potentially dangerous, or just an annoyance - would be interested in opinions on this.

In addition to this, the column has also developed a significant squeak. The squeak seems to be right near where the signal switch is. It sounds like a rubber surface squeak. Anyone know what contact point might cause this squeak?
