Trouble shooting odometer 200 1987

The odometer was not working when I bought this car a couple weeks ago. Just recieved a replacement gear for the odometer from IPD. Old gear was missing a couple teeth, one tooth was stuck in the internal tooth clear plastic 'gear' in the speedometer case. Reassemble instrument cluster. Test drive. No odometer.

Read FAQ. Pushed trip meter with an eraser. No joy. Putting a mile on the trip meter did not put a mile on the odometer. Any ideas what to do next ? Is it possible to bench test the stepper motor ? Can I hook up the 3 wire speedo harness and see if the motor runs ?

Will driving the car with the odometer not working wreck the new gear ?

One more bit of information (or a Red Herring ?). A piece of black plastic fell out of the speedometer head when I removed the circiut board and motor. The piece is shaped like a cup handle, about 0.7" long, 0.2" wide, and 0.1" thick. I could not see where it came from and don't know if it was even part of the speedometer.

Any ideas ?

Thanks

Greg
