Fuel Delivery Problem(I think) 960 900 1996

I've been experiencing intermittent fuel starvation issues with my 960.
It runs perfect 99% of the time but serveral times a week it temporarily acts starved for fuel. When the problem occurs it actually runs perfect unless you give it too much throttle - at which time it shudders and "doesn't go". This usually lasts a few seconds and then goes away.
The problem got acute last week at which time I limped home with the problem being constant and then put in a new fuel filter. The old one was clogged.
Now the problem is back to being occasional.
I'm assuming it's likely the fuel pump as I've had a similar problem with a truck I used to own.
I've read others speak of a problem with the fuel pump relay - I've got the testing procedures for it on this car but how good is it gonna be to test it when it's working fine 99% of the time?
Another problem is this: When I look up the fuel pump part for this car(aftermarket) it says this vehicle has two pumps with one being in the tank and the other near the filter. There is NO pump near my filter. Also, When replacing the fuel filter I found that the online sources varied as to the location of the filter with none of them being exactly right. It ended up being located under the car about mid-way on the drivers side.
So anyway - I've looked up the replacement pump(in-tank) and the description on the parts dealer(autozone.com) states there ARE two pumps. Of course - they only carry one(the in-tank one).

So in summary my questions are as follows:
1) Are there two pumps on this car?(1996 960 Auto w/2.9 I-6) and if so - where is the other one?
2) Does the pump or relay seem the likely culprit?
3) How can I test the fuel relay for a problem that I can't always duplicate?
4) How can I trust I'll get the right part when the description advises there are more pumps on this car than there apparently are?
5) The autozone parts cost ends up being $71 for a new pump and filter-sock for it? I'm sure the OEM volvo part is a multiple of that number. Who would be a good online source for the right pump without being sodomized by Volvo?

Thanks to any one of you guys for some advice...I'm trying to keep the wife from being stranded.
