Noisy Transmission + slippage 200 1985

I'm not sure what model of transmission I have, but it's a manual.

Anyway, transmission is a little louder than normal in 1 & 2, but in 3 & 4 it sounds like a B-17 during a bombing run. Overdrive is a little bit quieter. When I first start the car, I have to wait until the car hits a certain temperature or speed (haven't figured out which) before I can put the car in overdrive on the highway. Sometimes it'll slip out. Once the car has been warmed up and running for a while say over 30 minutes, it'll stay in overdrive.

Any thoughts on how to fix it?

Is it simple enough for an amateur to work on?

Thanks in advance!
