Hood release/cable Q. Any ideas? 200

At 296,300 miles, the plastic barrel adjuster on the hood release on my '92 wagon broke. It's now darn near impossible to adjust the cable tension so the hood will open and close properly without a lot of fiddling with the cable.

I have an '88 parts car with the old style (white pull rod) hood release. Does anyone know if this will work in the '92? Or, is there a way to simply swap the new-style release lever handle for the old-style white pull rod? I don't have the ambition to play around with it any more than I need to in the cold garage.

Thanks as always.
