Cleaning/smoothing the top of the engine block 700 1991

As you might gather from my posts lately, I am replacing the head on my 745T. What technique and tools/abrasives do you guys recommend for cleaning up the top of the engine block while the head is off?

The FAQ file on head gasket replacement mentions 60 grit sandpaper on a belt sander. To this I say: "NO!" I don't want grit and filings in my cylinders and oil passages. Nor do I want a surface that is that rough, probably way too rough for proper gasket sealing.
