Speedometer Sender in Differential Cover 200 1990

The speedometer and odometer stopped working on my daughter's 1990 245. Following the Bentley manual, we found that the speedometer sender in the differential is bad. Bentley says we might need new shims to adjust the clearance between the sender and the impulse wheel. You guys that have done this repair: Did you end up needing new shims? Or do the new senders usually set up properly with the old shims? My daughter lives in a different city, and I'm not sure which size shims, if any, to tell her to buy with the sender.
