For a couple of years I've had a new front exhaust pipe stored away in my garage. It is Volvo part 1357699 - a surplus part I bought from a Volvo dealer clearing out new old stock (NZ$50 which was about US$25 at the time). (This is the exhaust pipe that goes from the bottom flange of the exhaust manifold to the front flange of the catalytic converter. At the time I was told that it would fit my 940GL, but foolishly I never clambered under my car to check. This weekend I decided to look at using it as a replacement for the front pipe on my 1994 940GL NA, but on close inspection it turns out to be a different part.
The 940GL front exhaust has several heat shield type things fitted to it, and has a slight upward bend just before the catalytic converter whereas the 1357699 part has no heat shields and is a straight run from the front exhaust hanger mounting to catalytic converter flange. Also, the distance between the catalytic converter flange and the bell house mounting hanger seems to differ by about 50mm or so.
A search on the internet seems to indicate that the pipe I have is in fact for a 740GL 1984-87. Not too many of these left around in NZ any more so it may be one for the scrap heap.
The reason I was looking at changing the front pipe is because the weld on a heat shield has broken loose and this gives the car has an annoying rattle at idle. Guess I'll have to look at getting a small tack weld done to refasten it instead.
