running rich but no codes? 200 1993

Has anyone seen a condition like this:

-engine starts and runs well, smooth, even power hot or cold
-sudden 20% drop in fuel economy even after factoring in cold weather and snow tires
-no error codes retrieved
-oil unusually dark in colour despite being only one month and 1000 miles old

I was thinking fuel pressure regulator faulty causing rich condition, but wouldn't that trigger a fault in the onboard diagnostics? I trimmed the end of the vacuum line to the FPR to make a better seal but have not run it long enough to notice a difference.

This car has about 200,000 miles on it - is this a typical lifespan of a FPR?

Any thoughts?
