Alternator Charge question 200 1993

My daughter had our '93 240 die out on her after getting off the highway. After jump starting she drove another 5 miles, no lights or radio, and it died again in front of an indie. just before it stalls out the SBS light and Srs light come on. Battery is a good one about a year old, no recent history of charge problem. Atl warning light never came on. Indie says it's the alternator for sure. Any thoughts on why the alt light never came on?
