142 cams 140-160

That sounds almost identical to what I've experienced performance wise... I didn't build my motor.. don't know who did... so I don't know what cam it's got. I measured lift and it seemed on par with the old R-sport grind, but I don't know.

That said.. my motor is probably built a bit more than the original poster's proposed modifications.. it's a big bore (2.1l), probably higher compression, and thoroughly ported.

When I first fired it up with SUs, it ran fine, but nothing special... one of the quicker B20 cars I'd ever driven, but not spectacular. And it idled horribly, and had horrible bottom end. I'm sure it could have been greatly improved with more appropriate needles.. but... Then I bolted on the pair of DCOE 40s, and man.. that was like night and day. Not only did it exhibit the 'scream' above about 3000rpm, but the idle smoothed to a standard I've never been familiar with on any but the most stock SU equipped cars. Still seems a bit shy under that 3k mark, but again.. that's comparative.. it's better than stock.

So.. to the original poster.. sounds to me like you are getting into the upper range of power, so.. I think you should really consider doing exhaust and carburretor stuff right away when you put the new engine in. You might be disappointed a bit otherwise...

I'll also add that I am a huge fan of SU carbs, but in some applications, they simply aren't the best..
