Crank position sesor - only after 1988? 200 1987

Ignorant question - just noticed someone mentioned that CPT is only on 1988 models and after that. Seeing that it will get you stranded I initially thought of replacing one as preventative maintenance. But now I guess I don't have to. Is there another kind of sensor on 1987 that fulfills the same role and is as fatal to stranding you if it breaks?
60K miles if it matters. I carry the fuel pump relay and the fuses just in case.
Thanks!
