'92, 180K, "dirty' exhaust, rough idle/gasping? 200

O degrees F. No trouble starting. Didn't stall. Idle a bit rough and not steady. Wife idled it for 5+ minutes to warm inside up (normally drives it w/in 20 seconds). Exhaust always looks like a tinge of brown (compared to '89 and '93 245s). She drove off and came back reporting check engine light on. I haven't checked codes yet. I'll first look for split vacuum line. What else? Plugged/shot cat? If so, which are good ones (I've heard some may have a tendency to smell odd (and this car has had an odd smell for long time not traceable to any fluid leaks. Not in an emmissions testing area or would have checked a while ago.
