setting valve clearance? 700 1991

Have read the FAQ. Head is off, going back on today, and I need to set the valve clearances. Some in the replacement head were a little tight. I have the eight shims from the old head to work with too. Am doing this on the bench, prior to installing the head in the car.

It also will be getting new little rubber hushers. But, until they squash down (a few minutes of hot operation) they will make the clearances measure too tight, right? So, can I set the clearances without putting the hushers in place, then go back and put them in? Or will that result in screwed up clearances after they squash down?

Am trying to avoid having to shoot in the dark (due to the effect of new hushers), then having to remove the valve cover and gasket again in a day or so.

Thanks
