Traction in snow 700 1989

Hi all! I'm a first time Volvo owner, I've always loved them, and I knew I had to have a wagon. I bought a 1989 745GL as a project, its in average condition but needs some tlc...My question...Driving in Minnesota means dealing with snow and ice, the traction with this car is really poor, is that the way these rear wheel drives are, or even though the tires are average, do I need a better tire? Any input would be greatly appreciated! I will be hear often as I am a rookie to these wonderful cars!!!
