Why so many solder joint failures? 200

This is just a matter of curiosity for me, but does anyone know why solder failures are such a common cause of trouble with relays and other circuits on our Volvos? I have several vehicles much older than our '93 240 which rarely exhibit electrical maladies, yet on the 240 it seems that I'm fighting them too often.

Most of the electronics in our Volvos are German in origin. Did the Germans have planned obsolescence in mind?
