88 740 wagon 330k : Body "Ding' repair question 700

I have this idea that all the dings and scrapes all around the car can be filled and prepped by me and then to the body shop. I've used the fill and prime materials extensively in my former job as a commercial sculptor, and can prep well.

About a body shop: For this sort of multiple spot repair, do they repaint the whole car? Or has anyone had them spot paint the fixes and somehow blend them in?

I have a feeling that making the dings become history (they are minor, but quite a few on this old wagon) will cost around a thousand dollars. Time to save up. Your experience of this would be read with interest.
