I've just picked up a new noise from under the hood of my 1988 765 Turbo - ~275000 Km, nominal engine work since new, lots of front disk brake replacement, and a perennial start, quit, start cycle which I've just grown accustomed to. However, today it's picked up a sound similar to the old playing card in the bicycle spokes, but somewhat metallic, cuts in at around 1500 rpm and frequency increases with rpm, cuts out around 2K-2500 rpm. It disappears entirely if I select neutral while rolling, but right back precisely at 1500 when back in gear. I was able to edge up to the noise stopped, on the brakes and in gear - again at 1500rpm. There's no evidence of fan/shroud contact, no noise when I 'rev' the engine whilst parked - in park or neutral, and no apparent bits dangling where they don't belong. Any suggestions - what might come into play when engine is under load, but not when at high idle? I read the section in the FAQs re turbo losing its clearances, but wouldn't that occur with engine acceleration even in no-load condition? Any takers?
Regards, Garth.
