Welcome to the BB.
We are all Do it yourselfers here so we like you attitude about wanting to know the car you are sitting in.
With the '89, you should hear the fuel pumps pump for about 1 full second when you turn the Key to the ON position. So turn the key to unlock the steering wheel, then go one more click and listen for a small whirr. for a second then it will stop. If you don't hear that, it may be a bad Fuel Pump Relay, located on the passenger side of the car up about knee level, under the Bolster (knee pad). Turn those big plastic circles about 90 degrees to release them and the Bolster will drop down. The relay is a white plastic box. Clipped to the firewall.
The main fuse that was also mentioned is a good thing to check. This would also cause the fuel pumps not to run. It sends power to the Relay. It is under the hood on the drivers side fender. Look for the white Fuse Holder with a Red wire going to it. The fuse is Clear colored and just pulls straight up out of the Holder.
We all tend to forget that some people aren't 'hip' to the acronyms we use sometimes and we forget that people don't know wher ethings are located so. Just post back with "where is it" or "what is "FPR" no problem.
