transmission growl? 200 1983

Hi all,

I've come across a very nice 70k-mile 1983 242 automatic (with overdrive button). Drives very nice but when braking or coasting to a stop in Drive (did not try it in neutral, alas) there's a pronounced growl from the transmission area that becomes audible around 15mph and slows / fades as you stop moving. Happens every stop, cold to warm. I've read about high-frequency noise from a driveshaft carrier bearing audible at highway speeds but this car's noise is only audible going slowly. Ideas? Run away?

Long-time car collector but first Volvo interest - thanks very much for your help!

Regards,
Jeff
