R134a Volvo retrofit kit only has one port?? 200

I am installing the Volvo R134a "retrofit kit" in my '85 245. It contains a new port, a "T" fitting that attaches to the outlet of the dryer. The instructions talk about plugging the two ports at the compressor because they are not needed anymore. Is the system intended to only have one port? How can the system be checked with gauges for faults that can only be detected with the system running?
