Nightmare! I'm having a hard time trying to get my '89 240 to pass emissions in Ontario. I've had 3 tests since October. First test (failed) showed high NO2 (1223 vs, 700) and very good HC and CO. Replaced the Oxygen sensor with a universal model and did a good job of it. Next test (#2) almost a mirror of the first with the same results. Replaced the Cat Converter a week later with a universal model and it went in well. Went for test #3 that day and was blown away by the results. My NO2 is down well below limit and the HC ppm is 5 times what it should be (383 vs. 62 @ 40k/h and 1173 vs. 200 @ idle). And the CO % is through the roof as well (13.90 vs. 0.35 @ 40 km/h and 13.55 vs. 1 @ idle). The test place also told me that they were seeing black smoke from the tailpipe (which I didn't see) and that they felt that I was burning almost straight fuel. Since then I have have been getting horrible gas mileage and a bit of a rough idle at times. So I don't know if the 2 week old O2 sensor has failed or if there's a vacuum leak somewhere or a fault in the header pipe. I can't see the O2 sensor having failed so quickly but I question my judgement daily with this thing. Thank you for any insight anyone may have. I'm stuck.
