93 940 - serious battery draw/drain - related to alternator 900 1993

I recently had my timing belt and water pump replaced in my 93 940 turbo (probably unrelated but...) 24 hours later, my battery was "dead as a turd" as my mechanic put it. Nver happened before...but he says unrelated. Since I was already there, we ran tests and when the field connector was pulled from the back of the alternator, the draw on the battery went away. I drove the car home, pulled the alternator and brought it to a respectable re-build shop, who refused to rebuild it as he claimed the unit was in perfect working condition and there was no draw. So I have been pulling the negative terminal on the battery for 2 weeks, getting an arc when I plug it back in every morning. If the regulator is not bad and the alternator is functioning, where do I go from here? The ground wire from the alternator appears to be fine...and if I unplug the field connector from the back of the alternator over night, the battery is fine the next day...battery test came back fine as well. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
