Missing headlight boots on '80 242 GT ? 200 1980

It dawned on me today while fiddling with the headlight wiring on my '80 242GT that there are no headlight rubber boots or plastic covers behind the headlamps. (This has the single round 7" headlamp; I have Hella E-codes in it. Quite nice light, indeed !!!)

I don't know why I never noticed it before, but it looks very odd that Volvo would leave the plugs open to the weather and water under the hood. My other Volvos all had something protecting the backside, either rubber boots that the bulb prongs popped through, or plastic enclosure covers that enclose the entire backside. The way these bulbs come right out the back in the center, I'm guessing these are supposed to have rubber boots where they plug onto the backside of the bulb, and that the bulb prongs just stick out through the rubber boot.

Anybody know what's supposed to be on it ?
