The worst things happen at the worst possible times. Such is life etc.
I was driving home tonight having covered nearly 1000 miles in my 1988 740 this weekend, and the engine cut out coming off a roundabout. I rolled to a stop and have not since been able to restart the engine.
The car is a 1988 740 saloon (sedan) and is a RHD standard UK spec. It has the 5 speed manual 'box and a B200 non-turbo engine. The car differs from its US cousins in that there is no emissions control equipment or lambda sensor. The injection system is fully mechanical, and doesn't have the constant idle system. It works by means of a metal diaphragm that lifts with speed to allow more petrol to the injectors. The ignition is worked by a coil and distributor. I believe there are a couple of electronic modules somewhere bt haven't really explored this avenue of the car.
At the side of the road, initially, I thought the timing belt had broken. I changed the belt last week, and luckily it is intact. I removed the oil filler cap and cranked the engine, the cam turns, so that is okay. I had the car recovered to a local garage, and they couldn't get it to start either.
I know that there is a strong spark, and the timing belt is alright. The problem seems to be fuel delivery. There is apparently only a dribble coming out of the injectors. The mechanic listened to the fuel pump and told me it sounds like it is working.
I have tried cranking the car many times, as have the mechanics. Sometimes it fires briefly; it wants to go but it seems like no fuel is getting into the cylinders.
I've checked the relevant fuses and they are fine. I haven't investigated any relays yet, or the fuel filter. Can anyone help? It's my only car so this is a very bad thing.
