1989 240 5 speed driveshaft sections alignment 200

My driveshaft uses a rubber flex coupling at the trans end, rubber support and bearing at the end of the front section, with universal joint and splined yoke on the front of the rear drive shaft.

I recently replaced the universal joint on the front of the rear section and reassembled it in the same way as it was before taking it apart.

My question is about the correct way to insert the splines from the forward rear yoke into the back of the front drive shaft. All of the literature and photographs I found on brickboard show a universal joint adjacent to the trans which I do not have. I have looked for oem alignment marks without success. There are splotches of yellow paint on the front and rear drive shaft sections but I don't know the origin of these.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
