My '90 240 wagon hick-uped while driving into work this morning. I was tooling along at about 70 mph & suddenly it lost power, as if I turned off the ignition for a tenth of a second, then turned it back on again. I looked down at the dash & noticed the check engine light was illuminated. Since it seemed to be running ok after the event, I continued on my way until I reached my normal exit. The car idled fine while I waited for the light to change at the bottom of the ramp, and all seemed fine as I came back up to speed & finished my commute. I shut it down as normal in the parking lot at work, and it restarted just fine but the check engine light was still illuminated. Unfortunately I don't have my Bently manual with me, so I muddled through the procedure for checking codes relying on my weak memory. I was able to retrieve one code with the plug stuck into socket #6; the code was 1-4-4. I forgot the procedure for clearing the code, so I couldn't verify if the problem had cleared up or if it still exists. Don't you hate it when you look for something (like a tech manual) & its not where you thought it was? Old age ain't for sissys!
For some reason my car is equipped with the Jetronic LH 3.1 system, perhaps because it is equipped with a manual 5 sp transmission. I've searched around looking for LH 3.1 codes to no avail. My question is are the diagnostic codes the same for a 3.1 system as they are for a LH 2.4 system? If so, what is the loss of a fuel load (description of a 1-4-4 code on LH 2.4) mean? I have has some intermittent trouble with my fuel pump relay over the past year - could it have fallen off line for an instant & caused the code?
