Cleaned throttle body... now air mass meter is bad? 200 1987

Hi all,

I'm hoping someone can chime in on my situation. Brickboard has been a great help in the past but I've searched the forums and haven't been able to find an answer to my question.

My recently acquired 87 245DL had a rough idle. It never stalled, but would idle inconsistently and sometimes stumble when accelerating from a stop. Otherwise, it ran pretty strong at higher revs.

Hoping to fix the rough idle, I recently replaced the air filter, spark plugs, and flame trap and cleaned the throttle body. After hooking everything back up, though, my car would idle nicely for 5-10 seconds and then stall. I thought cleaning the TB would help, not hurt, my idle!

Then, after poking around Brickboard, I came upon the idea of testing out the air mass meter. Sure enough, if I disconnected it, the car would idle just fine. If I connected it, the car would stall after 5-10 seconds.

So, my question is: Why did my air mass meter go bad after I cleaned the throttle body? Was it coincidence or does cleaning the TB somehow exacerbate problems with a dying AMM?
