Exhaust Clamps and Rust on Pipes

I put a new OEM Volvo exhaust on my 745 four years ago. When I ordered it, I forgot to ask for clamps, so when it arrived I merely went down to Advanced Auto and bought the generic u-clamps for the pipes. Four years later, the system has failed right where the pipes and clamps intersected. Volvo exhausts usually last eight years even in the salt belts. I suspect that differences in metallic structure caused galvanic corrosion at the interface. My other Volvo exhausts, using all-Volvo clamps, never suffer from this problem.

So a word to the wise: use clamps matched to your system, sourced by the same folks. Stainless on stainless exhausts, Volvo aluminized on Volvo aluminized exhausts, Bosal on Bosal, etc.
