Engine will not fire after sitting one day. Ran great before. What happened? 200 1979

Hi guys. "I love these cars except when ...." My daughter's '79 242 (CIS) will not fire after sitting only one day. It drove fine, smooth with plenty of power until it was parked for several hours. It cranks. I went ahead and replaced the cap and rotor. Filled the tank. Used a different good coil off another 240 with no success. Wires seem good. No burned out fuses. Grounds seem good. When I put the key in III position I hear a continual little hum that seems to come from the front, not the fuel pump. I don't know what that hum is, however. Then I put it in III position again and never hear the fuel pumps kick in but I cannot remember if I ever have heard them on this car. I am not sure if there is a spark but if there is no fuel it will not fire anyway. What is the best test for the pumps? How do I test the relays and is there more than one fuel pump relay on the '79? It does not make sense that it has been so reliable and then just not fire.
I would appreciate any help. After having several 240's it seems I should know this one but it doesn't happen enough for me to remember. I don't tinker as much as just try to fix 'em when they stop. I do not want to replace any more parts unless necessary. Any practical how-to help would be appreciated. ~ jg
