In tank fuel filter orientation 700 1991

Again, am having problems with something, the fuel system is suspect.

Does anyone know what the orientation of the little sock fuel filter that is in the tank should be? Am talking about the one that attaches to the end of the pump on the pump/fuel gauge sender assembly. My car has the all-plastic, enclosed float, later version of the pump/sender assembly.

The first time that I took ours out I did not pay attention to the orientation, and installed it with the long part of the sock pointing forward, to the front of the car, and the little end pointing backward. Am wondering if that might be wrong.

Does anyone know?
