May have messed up kickdown cable after removing tranny... 900 1993

A few days ago I dropped the auto tranny to replace a leaking rear crank seal.
Unfortunately I forgot to unhook the kickdown cable! The weight of the tranny
pulled on it pretty hard before I noticed, jacked the tranny back up and
disconnected the cable.
After putting everything back together the car upshifts at 4000+ rpm...
The kickdown cable feels fine, I can pull it out, then feel the 'kickdown'
where it becomes more difficult to pull, and can pull it a little more.
I tried loosening the cable, with 3 steps I loosedned it by 3.5 turns of the
adjusting nut, however this had very little effect on the shifting.
Any suggestions? Did something inside the tranny got bent?
I assume at the least I'll have to replace the cable...
Any advice or BTDT would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Csaba
