Mysterios red wire 900 1993

I recently posted regarding an aggressive battery drain related to my alternator. When I unplug the red wire on the back of the alternator (the one with the flat field connector) the drain goes away...but my car still runs. What is the function of this and is it bad to drive with it disconnected until I have the funds to research deeper? Thanks in advance!
