'88 has strange whining or "winding down' sound.? Tranny seems fine!!! 200 1988

I am flummoxed again with my '88 240 DL. There is a noise after driving about 5 minutes that sounds like it is the tranny winding down when I slow down. It sounds like a big electric motor when it slows down. The fluid is good. It shifts easily and at the right times. Overdrive is good. At speed the sound is higher pitched. When I get up to speed and shift into neutral I still hear it. Obviously when I slow down, still out of gear, I still hear it and it is winding down and stops when I stop. It sounds like it is from the engine/tranny area. What is your best guess? Tranny, center bearing, differential, or wheel bearings? I have had trouble with the wheel bearings and have been unable to get the inner race out. I don't know how to do that. I put new bearings in there leaving the old race in and packed it full of grease. I just cannot remember if the sound I am describing began after that. I suppose once the sound goes through the frame it sounds different. Any help on this one is appreciated.
