oil light 200 1989

I am perplexed because the oil indicator light is on ALL THE TIME! Even when the car is shut down.
How should I proceed? Engine oil level is fine, but I have not yet had the oil pressure checked. OTOH, it seems bizzare that the light would remain on after the car is parked for days!
