Tail light wiring and brightness. 200 1990

A few months ago the rear lights on driver's side stopped working so I soldered the wires onto the light holding fixtures with no particular problems. Then I noticed the running light on the passenger's side stopped working. I could not figure it out so I just ran a wire from the newly fixed DS light to the nonworking PS light. It worked OK, except that the PS light is BRIGHTER than the DS and it burns out faster than the dimmer one.
A friend recommended that I check the grounds for the lights, which I did with no results. The PS light remains brighter, and presumably will burn out faster.
Anyone know a fix for this weirdness?
Thanks.
