Remove headliner 1800 1970

Removal is pretty straight forward with these cautions; Highly suggest you get the tool used for removing door panels.
It's a type of small pry bar with a "forked end" the size of a screw driver. It really helps getting the push-in attachments popped back out without damaging the headliner itself. (IPD part number T80645; http://www.ipdusa.com/Volvo-P1800/Tools/Door-Panel-Removal-Tool/p-84-727-2432/). Also be very careful keeping the wooden headliner frame straight/flat around the area of the rearview mirror. My headliner frame is very thin in this area and will break if bent too much.
Start by getting all the visor screws out, and then comes the rear view mirror. If I recall the end of the mirror stalk (towards the base)there is a ball that was pressure fit into the base. I believe I grabbed the stalk and just gave it a solid yank and it popped out of the base. Then just remove remaining base screws. [Note; be sure to follow manuals for the mirror removal, I'm not sure my memory is correct here and one doesn't want to go around inappropriately "yanking" on stuff!]. Put all screws and other removed pieces in labeled baggies.
Now is the delicate part; Start near the rear window and begin by inserting the tool behind the headliner trim and begin "popping" loose the push-in attachments (If you've ever removed a door panel, the headliner uses these same attachments). Work your way forward around to about the door and then work the other side. Suggest you have a helper hold up the headliner as you work around. Once all of these attachments are free from their respective holes in the roof you'll be able to reach in through an open window between the roof and above/behind the liner to the three lateral stays that are left holding the liner to the roof. Remember to be extra careful of the wooden frame around the area of the mirror so it doesn't snap.

The stays are removed by pushing them either right or left as far as they'll go and then sliding one side of the stay free of the roof to get each of them to drop. They are kind of like the slats in the base of a bed holding up the box springs. The important part for stay removal is to not push them forward/rearward too much or you'll tear the sleeve they sit in which is part of the headliner. (e.g. have a couple of beers and take it easy...). Once the headliner and frame are free keep it flat/horizontal and turn the whole thing perpendicular to the car center line and take it carefully out passenger's side door opening.

Once you get the liner assembly on your workbench use a good, flexible,clear-if possible, glue to reattach the loose sleeve to the liner. Be sure to not glue the sleeve opening closed or glue the stay to the liner since it needs to move
freely inside this sleeve.
Installation, as they say, is opposite removal. Hope this helps and good luck
