Instrument panel/electrical/engine failure 200 1989

Double check battery cables and conections. Engine and frame grounds.

The alternator needs sensing voltage from the instrument panel on most cars. They get it from the alternator light circuit on the instrument panel. Make sure the light bulb is good when the key is on but not running.

With the key on you should have approximately 12 volts at the D+ wire. This is called a sensing wire for the voltage regulator. The reason it is there is to read a more true "remote voltage" of the cars system after component voltage drops.

There is a resistor on some cars that is wired parallel of this circuit to insure more voltage drop than the bulb alone. If the light bulb is good and it doesn't light then there is a problem with this wiring circuit.
